FAQs
A commercial vehicle (CV) is a vehicle that’s designed for transporting cargo or equipment, or for providing services. It is specifically used for work or business, rather than private use or pleasure. For this reason, commercial vehicles are often bought or hired by businesses or fleets, although they can be privately owned. A commercial vehicle is usually more durable and adaptable than a car.
If you have a full standard driving licence (category B), you can drive any van with a gross weight up to 3,500 kg (3.5 tonnes). This covers most vans on the road and the majority of vans supplied by Briggs Equipment. If you passed your driving test before 1 January 1997, you should also have the C1 category on your licence. This allows you to drive vans with a gross weight up to 7,500kg (7.5 tonnes), which covers every van on the road and even some small lorries. However, if you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, you may need to take additional tests before you can drive vehicles with a gross weight up to 7,500kg (7.5 tonnes) or tow a trailer with your van.
To hire a commercial vehicle from Briggs Equipment, you will need a full standard driving licence (category B minimum), insurance, deposit, and means of payment (usually a credit or debit card).

Legally, you must have at least third-party insurance for your commercial vehicle, but many businesses and private owners will choose a higher level of cover, for example comprehensive insurance.
If you use your commercial vehicle for your business or profession, which includes driving to and from a single place of work, you need business van insurance (also known as commercial van insurance). There are different categories of business van insurance based on how you use your commercial vehicle, so be sure to get the right level of cover.
Also, business van insurance may or may not cover the personal or professional goods you carry in the commercial vehicle, so you should check this with your insurer. You may need to add goods-in-transit cover to ensure all cargo in the vehicle is fully insured.
