Briggs Defence health and safety commitment recognised

Four major health and safety commendations in as many months are testament to Briggs Defence’s ongoing commitment to the health, safety and well-being of its employees.

As well as winning an International Safety Award and a RoSPA Silver Award the specialist division of asset management and engineering services provider Briggs Equipment was a finalist in the 2019 Safety & Health Excellence Awards. In addition, Briggs Defence’s occupational health and safety management system has achieved the ISO45001:2018 standard.

Briggs Defence is one of 248 organisations to win a Merit in the 2019 International Safety Awards.  Presented by the British Safety Council, the accolades celebrate organisations from around the world that have satisfied the scheme’s independent judging panel of their commitment to preventing workplace injuries and work-related ill health during the previous calendar year.

A commitment to making safety a priority has also resulted in a RoSPA Silver Award. Briggs Defence’s record throughout 2018 was judged to clearly demonstrate a robust occupational health and safety management system and culture. RoSPA’s independent panel of experts includes representatives from the Health and Safety Executive, the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health and the Trades Union Congress who commended Briggs Defence for complying with control measures governing principal risks and action on health issues.

For championing the importance of health and safety and implementing improvements to keep people safe, Briggs Defence was named as a finalist in the 2019 Safety & Health Excellence Awards staged in conjunction with the British Safety Industry Federation. Briggs Defence was shortlisted for the Health & Safety Team of the Year accolade, which recognises health and safety teams that make a significant difference in their work environment.

In 2018 the health and safety management system used by Briggs Defence was assessed by the British Standards Institute as compliant with the standards required by OHS 655623 (BS OHSAS 18001:2007). Since then, investment in enhancements and general improvements have ensured that the system – operated across the Briggs Equipment business – now meets the requirements of the ISO45001:2018 standard governing the sale, hire and lease of equipment and the provision of service, maintenance and equipment repair to Briggs Defence customers.

Gary Clements of Briggs Defence said: “We wholeheartedly endorse the British Safety Council’s philosophy that sensible and proportionate management of health and safety risks benefits employees, organisations and society as a whole. That’s why we put health and safety at the heart of our business.

“We’re very proud of our dedicated health and safety team whose work has led to increased staff participation and, by improving the reputation of health and safety in the workplace, has produced outstanding results.”
