Briggs Has its Cart Marked in the City of London

Organised by the Worshipful Company of Carmen on behalf of the Corporation of the City of London, this year’s Cart Marking ceremony took place today at the stunning Guildhall in London and recognises the work transport has played in the evolution of British industry.

Briggs Equipment continues its own tradition of entering a cart and this year was proud to participate in the extra special 500th anniversary of the ceremony in the City of London.

Carmen apprentice Caitland Lomas makes her return to Cartmarking to showcase her operator skills by taking control of the Briggs Equipment Hyster 2.5t machine powered by the latest ‘low emissions’ LPG engine. Caitland became a Carmen apprentice at the age of 14 and takes pride in her involvement in logistics and participation in this wonderful event.

Set in the beautiful Guildhall Yard, each vehicle is brought for the Master’s inspection, then branded by the Keeper of Guildhall, using a special brazier and gloves provided by the Glovers’ Company. The duties of the Keeper are shared with the Lord Mayor, and also the Master Carman. Afterwards the Lord Mayor, Sheriff, Master Carman and Wardens doff their caps as each vehicle passes the rostrum.

As modern day transport and logistic suppliers are still seen as the car-men of today, the City of London retains the right of marking annually to maintain their ancient tradition in this wonderful ceremony. Briggs Equipment has a longstanding history of providing logistics support and solutions to businesses across the UK and has prided itself on entering its own cart or forklift truck from the short term hire fleet over prior years.

The ceremony is witnessed by around 700 people, after which the ceremony dignitaries, members of The Worshipful Company of Carmen and their guests enjoy lunch in the magnificent Great Hall.
