Unique BE Finance Solution for Timber Business

Briggs Equipment is supporting growth at the UK’s largest fully integrated forestry company with a bespoke asset management solution funded by its standalone asset finance business, BE Finance.

BSW Timber Group, which operates seven sawmills across the UK and one in Latvia, has taken delivery of eight new Bulmor side-loaders on a rental contract with full maintenance in a deal valued at £900,000.

BSW has diversified from being a supplier of standard sawn timber into new markets, including high quality, heavy duty garden structures, camping pods and barbecue fuels, and its business has grown to such an extent that engineering support is now a priority. With this latest £900,000 investment, BSW’s previous supplier was unable to deliver the service levels required so Briggs created a unique solution, thanks to its ability to finance such deals in-house, which enabled the timber company to exit its previous contract and introduce the new Bulmor side-loaders.

Commenting on the deal, which is part of a major investment in its materials handling capabilities, BSW Timber Group’s Southern Regional Manager Dave Burd said: “Having carried out a thorough evaluation of all the different manufacturers and suppliers in the UK marketplace, we quickly came to the conclusion that Briggs is the best partner for us.

“It is the only company that could deliver a flexible and cost-effective package incorporating equipment and services, especially engineering support, which meets our requirements.”

The side-loaders have gone into service at BSW’s sawmill in Newbridge-on-Wye, Powys, where they will be used to transport timber packs, which vary in length and weigh up to six tonnes. In a site-specific solution, the side-loaders are the only machines capable of navigating the aisles in the sawmill yard and stacking timber packs on to the racking.

Fitted with a telemetry system to improve fleet management, the machines have also been modified in accordance with BSW’s commitment to promoting a safe working environment and adhering to industry best practice. Briggs specified the side-loaders with a number of safety features, including pedestrian awareness lights, upgraded LED lighting, cameras, weigh systems and tyre gauges.

Joe Moir, Regional Sales Director (Scotland) at Briggs Equipment, said: “We’ve been working with BSW Timber Group for many years and are currently looking after its fleet of 25 machines, which includes forklifts, man up platforms and Genie aerial access equipment.

“We are delighted to support this latest stage in the company’s growth programme with flexible finance, full maintenance and parts support and proactive account management as part of a new, customised asset management solution for the Newbridge-on-Wye sawmill.”

A fifth generation family-owned business that can trace its roots back to 1848, BSW Timber Group produces more than 1,200,000 cubic metres of sawn timber a year, mainly for the UK’s construction, fencing and landscaping markets. During the past decade the business has invested over £6million in its Newbridge-on-Wye facility, making it the largest single-site sawmill in Wales, employing 148 staff.
