Combilift Combi-PPT nominated for IFOY Award after being developed for Briggs’ customer Cummins UK

Cummins UK delivers Cummins generator sets from 4kW to 3000kW for a variety of applications including marine, retail, telecommunications, oil and gas, data centres, hospitals, construction sites and mining. The very heavy products that are handled at the company’s sites across the country can be potentially dangerous if not handled and transported in the appropriate manner. Cummins’ management therefore wanted to ensure the highest levels of safety for operators and other personnel and consulted with Alan Mood, Briggs’ National Account Manager for Cummins.

Having supplied Cummins for over 15 years, Briggs have a very intimate understanding of the operations and processes within the plant and the unique challenges faced by the business. Alan identified the various challenges that Cummins faced when moving heavy assembled engine units at the Daventry plant which can weigh up to 16t. Having worked with specialist manufacturer Combilift previously, Alan realised that the company’s customised approach to providing handling solutions was going to best satisfy this particular customer’s requirements for safety whilst ensuring efficient operations.

Cummins management and Briggs were looking for increased capacity and more reliable and robust equipment compared to that previously used. The solution would need to be easier to control when moving large products in restricted or confined areas, and would also offer multi-functionality across the plant. A further issue, in line with a growing trend in the materials handling sector, was the wish to move away from ride on forklifts which are considered to pose more risks in busy production areas than walk behind or pedestrian trucks.

After the initial survey and assessment of feedback from all concerned, including operatives on the production floor, Briggs and Combilift developed the new high capacity walk behind Combi-PPT (power pallet truck). The new machine has proven so successful that it has even been shortlisted as a finalist for the IFOY Awards 2019 (International Intralogistics and Forklift Truck of the Year.)

Combilift products ranging from 1.5t to 30t capacity are in use at Cummins’ plants, but this new product specifically addressed the requirements of the assembled 16t engines when they are transferred from the production area to the testing and despatch areas. The Combi-PPT features the same standard components and functions as the other products on site, the familiarity of which to operators contributes to a safer environment. As a result of the similarities, training and maintenance are also simplified.
