At Briggs Equipment our Engineers are the heartbeat our business. They support our customers when they need us most to help keep business moving. We have a fantastic team of mobile service engineers located across the UK and Ireland who all play a crucial role in the success of our Group. We’re proud of the work our Engineers deliver on a daily basis and through a series of articles, we hope to highlight some of the individual career stories of our people and discover what it means to them to be Briggs.

What is your job title and what area do you cover?

Hello, my name is Tim Dalton and I’m a Specialist Technician at Briggs Equipment and I work with customers in the East of England region.

How long have you worked for Briggs?

I’ve worked at the company for 40 years and I’m enjoying it as much as I did when I first started out.

What does a typical day look like for you?

There’s a lot of variety within my role as a Specialist Technician. I’m able to work closely with our customers but also share my knowledge and experience with other members of the team. I spend a fair amount of my time on-site, helping to service and repair various pieces of equipment that the customer requires to keep their operations moving. Essentially, it’s a great mix of hands-on practical work, sharing best practice with colleagues and learning new skills that I can take forward.

How has the role changed over the years?

One of the obvious changes is the advancement in technology, which has been really interesting to be involved with over the years. I’ve been able to witness first-hand how the machines and equipment we supply have developed and my skills have also had to move with the times. With the technology now at our disposal we’re able to diagnose problems much quicker and ultimately deliver quicker and more targeted solutions. Of course, one thing that doesn’t change is the relationship you build up with customers and your own team members.

What is your favourite part of the job?

Helping our customers get their equipment up and running is probably the most pleasing aspect of the job. As an Engineer you live for problem solving and it’s brilliant every time you can use your skills to fix a particular issue. I also really enjoy communicating with my colleagues and sharing the knowledge and skills that I’ve built up over the years. It’s so important for us to share information with each other as it can often help us in future jobs. Our team is really close knit and it’s great to feel part of a collective unit even when you might be working solo on a project.

How are you supported at Briggs Equipment with training and development?

We’re really well supported by the Learning and Training resources. Whilst the sheer amount of different equipment Briggs provide is really exciting, it’s crucial from a safety and compliance point of view that we’re up to date and fully trained. With our training systems we’re able to request and book the specific courses we require and the team always respond to help us out. For example, on one of my sites, we work on Powered Access Equipment, which is obviously different to traditional Materials Handling Equipment and we’ve been able to get fully trained so we can safely get to work.

What would you say to someone who was considering joining Briggs Equipment?

I would just say that Briggs is a fantastic company to work for and one that always puts safety first, which is really important for Engineers. There are excellent support and development opportunities to improve your skills as an Engineer and develop your career prospects. You’ll also get the chance to work on a wide range of equipment, which means no two days are rarely the same!
